Overview: The island's only city
Port Louis is the capital and only true urban centre of Mauritius, with around 150,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1735 by the French, it sits on the north-west coast in a bay between the Le Pouce massif and the harbour. The city mixes Creole, Indian, Chinese and European influences within a few square kilometres.
